With so many government services linked with your Aadhaar card, it is one of the most important documents you'll ever hold.
 
Thus, having all the correct and updated information in the UIDAI database becomes vital.
 
So, in case you find information like your name, address, e-mail, phone number on your Aadhaar card wrong, you can make the required changes online.
 
Here's how.
 
Initial steps: About logging on to UIDAI, and verifying your number
 
First off, head to the self-service update portal on the official website of UIDAI.
 
Now, enter your unique 12-digit Aadhaar number, and the verification code flashing on screen.
 
Next, you'll receive a one-time password (OTP) on your registered mobile number.
 
Write down the OTP, and click on 'Update.'
 
After that, select the option you want to update, ie. phone, address, e-mail etc.

After selecting the apt option, the base update form will be made available to you.
 
Now, add the information you want to update in your Aadhaar, and click on 'Submit' button.
 
Post that, you'll be required to upload copies of relevant documents in support of your update request.
 
Like, for change in name, self-attested copy of identity proofs like passport, PAN, DL are accepted.
 
Final steps: About selecting BPO, and issue of an update request number
 
Once the documents have been successfully uploaded, click on 'Submit' button.
 
Then, select the BPO service provider that will verify and inspect your details and forward the request to UIDAI.
 
Your update request is then initiated, and an acknowledgement slip containing an update request number (URN) is issued to you.

Post the September 26, 2018 SC verdict relating to authentication of Aadhaar, there has been much confusion with respect to services where Aadhaar is necessary and where not.
 
Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for services such as bank account, telecom services, and school admissions/entrance tests.
 
However, it is still necessary for getting a PAN, filing I-T returns, and availing government welfare schemes.
