The European Union has officially designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, marking a significant shift in Europe's stance against Tehran's violence.
This decision comes in response to the regime's deadly crackdown on protests, which has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths.
EU Foreign Ministers unanimously agreed to add the IRGC to the EU's terrorist organization list, aligning with the US, Canada, and Australia. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas stated, "Repression cannot go unanswered... Any regime that kills thousands of its own people is working toward its own demise"
The IRGC, established in 1979 to protect Iran's Islamic Republic, has been accused of human rights abuses and destabilizing activities abroad. This designation freezes IRGC assets and imposes travel restrictions on its members.
France, previously opposed to the move, shifted its position on January 28, paving the way for the designation. Germany and the Netherlands had long urged the EU to follow suit.
