SABROOM, Nov 6 (TWN): Tripura’s tea industry has completed 100 years in 2016. The industry began with the first tea garden -Hirachhera at Unakoti District in 1916. Participating in the Golden Jubilee celebrations MP Jiten Choudhury inaugurated the program at Sabroom Town Hall.MLA Pravat Choudhury , Rita Kar , ADM South Tamal Majumder & other guests were also remain present in the occasion.
There are 56 tea gardens in the state, 3 belong to government, 11 are cooperatives and the rest are private firms. MP Jiten said that the state has produced total 4.08 million kg tea till July this year.
Last year; the production was around 8.66 million kg. In 2014, there was hike in production – 9.01 million kg. The last year, production was decreased to some extent due to unequal distribution of rainfall.
Climatic factor plays a great role in tea production. Rainfall was really good here that helped in enhancing tea production,” he said. Total four types of tea is being produced here – black tea, green tea, CTC and Orthodox.
Pointing out that the objective was to help the producers realize fair prices; the MP said he was gratified that over the last ten years it had been doing well
