AMARPUR, May 1 (TIWN): Gomati Hydroelectric Power Project, located at Thirthmukh, which was commissioned in 1974, despite the protest by nearly 40,000 tribal people is now left in dying condition.
Reportedly, the people whose fertile lands went under water, were forced to give up their land as they had no land records to prove ownership. As a result many land less youths become insurgents and perhaps the problems of militancy of Tripura has gained ground------ recorded in various sources.
But In 2007, the water level of the dam had fallen tremendously and the decline of the Hydro plant thus began.
The land losers gathered on the emerging land and wanted their original land back in 2007.
After all these, the project is not generating power right now, because of low water level. But what was Tripura Govt.’s duty atleast to maintain the damn of that lake. But as Govt. is not taking any step to maintain the barrage, so during rainy season the area suffers from the flood warnings.
Although government has formed a committee to conduct a feasibility study to revive the dam, but it seems just for namesake. There's also rampant illegal intrusion of smugglers on that area.
The reservoir, which is the basic requirement of a hydro-electric power plant, due to lack of maintenance is left for almost “No-Use”.
