UDAIPUR, April 14 (TIWN): The recent earthquake held in India-Mayanmar border region has affected many buildings in Tripura.
The festive mood in Udaipur subdivision has been affected when Udaipur’s oldest slate stone made temple was left with major cracks after the earthquake of Wednesday evening.
This temple is however, the only fully stone made temple in Tripura built by Maharaja Govinda Manikya in 1661 A.D. It also bears the uniqueness on account of its very own style of construction. The temple is situated at south-west corner of a large pond called 'Puran Dighi' or 'Jagannath Dighi'.
However, due to the negligence of Tourism department the temple since 20 years had not come across any maintenance and that’s why it was affected by this major earthquake, said locals.
It is the only temple in Tripura built entirely with stone. It is heard that there were numerous rock-cut images engraved on the walls of the Jagannath Dev Temple. They don't exist now and nobody entered the temple since decades in fear of snakes and other harmful insects.
This temple is undoubtedly a peerless example of typical architecture of temples in Tripura.
