AGARTALA, Aug 28 (TIWN): The Dharmanagar police station has achieved a significant success in their crackdown on smuggling activities. On Thursday morning, around 8 am, the police seized a large consignment of Burmese cigarettes worth approximately ?70 lakh from a Bolero pickup van near Anandabazar Naka Point on the Kailashahar Road.
Acting on a tip-off, Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer B. Jurimpuiya led a team of police officers in the operation. The cigarettes were being transported from the border area, and the driver of the van fled the scene upon seeing the police.
The seized cigarettes will be sent to the court and later handed over to the Customs Department. This seizure is part of the ongoing efforts to curb the smuggling of Burmese cigarettes in the region, which has been a significant concern for the authorities.
Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Debbarma visited the Dharmanagar police station to congratulate the team on their success. The police are now investigating the smuggling network and identifying those involved in the illicit trade.
