AGARTALA, Aug 6 (TIWN): With few scheduled protests and lame demonstrations, so far Tripura opposition parties have failed to make any impact that could force the Tripura Govt to take action to limit the Smart Meters’ installation. Whereas West Bengal BJP opposed Smart meters, in Tripura BJP Govt was successful in forcefully imposing the meters even though these meters were brought as a scheme and should not be mandatory.
However, explaining why these meters are being imposed, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Lmt (TSECL) MD said, as the meters are owned by the TSECL to it will decide which meter the consumers will be using.
The CPI-M also continues to protest against Smart meters but the state Electricity Dept under power minister Ratan Lal Nath does not care.
Multiple cases have been reported where electricity consumers were billed with multi-thousand rupees, and in response, the power minister blamed the consumers.
According to Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, extra bills were coming most likely because the users did not pay the previous bills with some mutual and corrupt understanding with the meter readers. The department has also been investigating the allegation of the minister.
Right now, Smart meters have been made mandatory in Tripura, just like other BJP-ruled states in India.
