AGARTALA, July 14 (TIWN): Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath took a challenge of paying consumer's bill if Smart meter fails. He assured that there can be no malfunctioning or fraudulent practice behind Smart Meters. Nath was addressing the media at BJP head office in Agartala, Krishnanagar, and was irked by journalists' questions on abnormal billing allegations raised by consumers. Taking a challenge, Nath said, “We are going to put the electronic meter and Smart meter side by side. If any fault is shown in the Smart meter, I will pay that consumer’s bill.” However, he warned the consumers not to attempt to mishandle the Smart meter as there would be a system --- if you touch the Smart meter, then there might be a ringing alarm.
The Minister refused to disclose the company’s names which has received the tender to make Smart meters.
Talking about the opposition, who launched statewide protests, Nath said, "The opposition parties are actually not understanding the calculation."
He mentioned the bills increased at a time, as the consumers are paying the arrears due to a 10% electricity price rise.
