AGARTALA, July 14 (TIWN): Congress party activists protested in front of Bidyut Bhawan, which is the state electricity corporation's head office in Banamalipur, Agartala voicing against the imposition of Smart meters for TSECL consumers.
Smart meter is a scheme launched by the central government to regulate the electricity charges, assuring fair charges and transparency.
However, consumers alleged that electricity bills are excessively high due to the launch of Smart meters.
Though it's a scheme, TSECL has been forcefully imposing the meters on the consumers, and objecting to that, Congress organized the protest.
Youth Congress President Nil Kamal Saha slammed the Smart meter, raising questions on its functioning. The party members attended the protest and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Smart meter imposition decision.
TSECL also increased 10% electricity charges, which has added to the troubles for the consumers. Congress agitators also demanded to reduce the electricity charges because, since the BJP government came to power, multiple times the electricity charges were hiked in the state in the last 7 years.
