AGARTALA, July 2 (TIWN): Addressing a Road Safety and ambulance inauguration event, organized at Swami Vivekananda Stadium on Wednesday, DGP Anurag Dhankar expressed concerns over the number of road accident deaths in Tripura, which is in fact double than the number of murder cases in the state. The DGP, however, mentioned, the accident death rates in Tripura are lower than the national average.
“The number of deaths recorded due to road accidents is two times high as the murder cases in this state, despite the fact that we are lower than the national average,” said DGP. “Last year, 226 road traffic accident-related deaths were reported, whereas 116 murder cases were registered. So it’s almost two times than the murder cases.”
“Still, we are in better condition than the national average, and the traffic department is doing a great job. Whereas the national average road accidents are 33.5% whereas in Tripura, it’s 14% as per population, which is less than half. The death rates are also less than half in comparison with the national rates,” he said. “At the national level, almost 12 persons die in road accidents, whereas in Tripura, as per the land population it is 5.9%. So definitely we are doing well, but it has to be improved further.”
“The distributed ambulances will now provide support to emergency care. It is said that if the accident victim is provided treatment within an hour of the accident, which is known as golden hour, there is a 50% rise in survival chances,” said the DGP, referring to the 14 ambulances flagged off in the same program by CM Dr. Manik Saha.
The DGP further appealed to the people to participate in this life-saving mission and help police in the drive to reduce accident-related death numbers by admitting the accident patient at the nearest hospital as soon as possible after an accident.
“I assure you, on behalf of the police, if you help an accident victim, there will be no police call and even we will not call you to the police station for a statement, if you do not want it,” he added.
