AGARTALA, Sep 25 (TIWN): Devotees have offered ‘Tarpan’ to their forefathers on the occasion of Mahalaya.

Talking to a priest at Agartala Laxmi Narayan Bari, he said, people on this occasion every year offer prayers for the peace of their forefather’s soul.

For Bengalis, Mahalaya is not just the prelude to 10-day-long festival but a day of Maa Durga's homecoming. It’s believed that Ma Durga is given invitation and from Shashthi Maa Durga comes to her home with her children and stays till Dasami.

This year Durga puja to begin on October 1st (Shashthi).
