Agartala, September 19 (TIWN): No petition regarding rampant deforestation in the state was filed with the High Court of Tripura till date.
A total of 31 percent of indigenous people is still entirely dependent on forests for their livelihood.
Taking a jibe at the ruling Left Front government, Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura Deepak Gupta said that the poor people were still mostly ignorant of their rights and services available to them in Tripura.
Chief Justice Gupta on Thursday said at the inauguration of a new building of the district and sessions judge court at Udaipur that though judicial system of the state was highly efficient but environmental awareness wasn't upto the mark in crtain cases. No petition on deforestation was placed in the Court so far, he said.
"We have large number of trees cut down across the state. The entire subject of environment protection is at stake. Surprisingly, we have no petition against the practice,” Gupta said.
He jibed the state government on lack of awareness among the rural folks and said that genuine petitioners didn't get proper services due to lack of awareness.
