AGARTALA, Aug 24 (TIWN): 33000 displaced Reangs, now sheltered in six evacuee camps in Tripura’s North district today demanded status like Kasmiri Pandits or the Tamil refugees for a better living.This demand was made in a written memorandum submitted to the Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya when he visited the Naisinghpara evacuee camp in Kanchanpur subdivision.Handing over the memorandum, President of the Mizo Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF), A Swaibunga stated that the camp inmates were facing acute crisis of drinking water, proper accommodation and their children were growing like no body’s children.
The MBDPF also demanded works under MGNREGA for the inmates and old-age pension for the aged people and all other facilities given to the ‘primitive tribal group’ as the Reangs fall under the category.
They also demanded the facility of education and electricity in their camps.
Governor in his speech in a small function said, “Hope good times are ahead and it would be my moral duty to send a report to the central government and positively recommend for change of your lifestyle in the camps and expedite your return to your home with dignity”.
Among others, the District Magistrate of North Tripura, S R Rathore was also present in the function.
