AGARTALA, Sep 19 (TIWN): Tripura on Monday became the first state in the country to set up family welfare district committees to deal with the issue of fake and biased complaints by women against their husbands, in-laws and husband's relatives, as per an apex court directive. But question raises when Tripura is ranking 1st in NE on crime against women what's reason for so much urgency to launch it here ? Not only this, police’s role have been already relaxed to arrest the accused, with the establishing of family welfare committee.
High Court had conducted a programme with the formation of 'Family Welfare Committee in Tripura' at the direction of Supreme Court. Recently, in the Rajesh Sharma v. State of UP case, the Supreme Court has directed that each complaint of cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives, that does not involve tangible physical injuries or death, shall be referred to the Family Welfare Committee of the district.
Tripura High Court Judge Subhashish Talapatra said in the Rajesh Sharma versus state of Uttar Pradesh case, the Supreme Court on July 27 directed that each complaint of cruelty to a woman by her husband or his relatives, which does not involve tangible physical injuries or death, shall be referred to the family welfare committee of the district.
Leader of National Commission for Women Sushma Sahu in her last visit in Tripura has ranked the state as 1st among Northeast in rape cases.
Sushma Sahu on that time said, "I am shocked to see the data I received from Tripura in crime against women". Targeting media politics Sahu said that the way the crime is happening in state, at the national level the whole issue has remained hidden. "From outside, state Tripura is still believed as a peaceful state and no media highlights the issues seriously in National TV channels", said Sahu.
