AGARTALA, July 22 (TIWN): A high level delegation of the Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples Forum (MBDPF) today met Governor Padmanabh Balakrishna Acharya and sought his intervention for solving the 17 year long forced displacement from Mizoram. The delegation led by Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples Forum (MBDPF) president Apeto Sawibunga raised issues of acute sub-human condition of the displaced people living in six relief camps of North Tripura district and sought the Governor’s intervention to ensure proper ration, education and healthcare facilities for the camp inmates.
He sought the Governor’s intervention with the ongoing dialogue for repatriating the displaced population back to Mizoram as well. Over 37 thousand people from the Reang community fled Mamit, Kolasib and Lunglei districts of Mizoram following a massive riot between the ethnic Mizos and ethnic Reangs in 1997-98. The clashes continued in repeated phases later and the last group of displaced people came as late as 2009.
Repatriation was organized in six phases with mutual consent of the Government of Tripura, Mizoram and the MHA but most went inconclusive as people taken back in the previous phase of repatriation were found to be coming back in the face of acute security threat. Governor Acharya assured the delegation to look into the issue and said that he would initiate dialogue over with the issue with the Government of Tripura, Mizoram and the Government of India.
The Governor met Vice Chancellors of the Tripura (Central) University and the Holy Cross University later on the day. He took stock of the latest condition of education and curriculum in the universities and suggested both to expand further.
A source inside the Governor’s secretariat today said that the Governor had suggested Vice Chancellor of the Tripura University Professor AK Ghosh to introduce vocational training and further expanded linguistic studies in the university courses.
