AGARTALA, June 27 (TIWN): At a time when Health Minister Badal Chowdhury is on the move to provide better healthcare services, angry relatives of a patient went on rampage at Dharmanagar hospital this evening. Before police could bring the situation under control, angry relatives took the body of Safaruddin (55) to his residence at Durgapur.
Around 8.30 pm, Safaruddin was taken to Dharmanagar hospital with severe breathing problem and laid him on a bed at emergency room. As no medical officer or nurse turned up to the patient for treatment even after 8.50 pm, he breathed his last on the bed triggering anger among the relatives of the patient.
SDMO Dr. Amitabh Chakraborty, who was remained present in the hospital, did nothing to attend the patient. And, Dr. Lipika Paul, who was supposed to attend the patient, did not turned up even after repeated request by the patient party.
At one point to time, agitated relatives entered into the emergency room and ransacked the entire room. The table and beds were smashed while medicines were thrown away from the room. After receiving the information of chaos, a police team rushed to the hospital to bring the situation under control.
After creating havoc at hospital, the relatives took away the body of the patient without any resistance from the hospital authority.
However, no complaint has been registered with police yet. There are allegations government doctors remained busy with private practice while patient admitted in the hospital are struggling to get minimum treatment. If the authority doesn’t take remedial measure immediately, people might ‘attack’ hospital once again. People of Dharmanagar want Badal Chowdhury who has taken the charge of the Health department to visit the Dharamanagar hospital immediately to put the things in right direction.
