AGARTALA, March 10 (TIWN): Social and economic development is not possible without basic social infrastructure for human development. Social infrastructure for human need means building a strong foundation of human development towards a dignified life for all. But at rural Tripura sanitation has remained as a neglected issue.
Quality of life, health, hygiene and social environment, largely depend on proper sanitation. The status of sanitation rights of people in rural villages of Tripura shows that these basic human rights have not been realized by a majority of poor people.
Sanitation being a State subject, the State Government has not been adequately investing in the sector and also is yet to spell out a sanitation policy while the people continue to languish in extreme poverty, landlessness, illiteracy and social discrimination.
This will further deprive the poor of access to sanitation.
The issue of sanitation has been a matter of concern .
Most of remote area still does not have access to modern sanitation under Government Sanitation scheme.
The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has implemented programme like Total Sanitation Campaign and huge amount of fund had been released.
As far as State implementation is concern no such active step has been taken for proper Sanitation to the rural needy families.
Tripura State Sanitation Mission formed in 2002 has been ineffective in reaching to the rural and tribal areas.
