AGARTALA, Oct 11 (TIWN): CPI (M) General secretary Sitaram Yechuri on Sunday arrived in the state to attend an anti-communalism convention at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan.
CPI (M) General secretary Sitaram Yechuri landed at Agartala airport at 10.42am in the morning and was welcomed by workers of the party in presence of some state party leaders at Agartala airport.
Most prominently Yechury was welcomed by Rs 51 crore scamster BDO Bimal Chakraborty's brother Amal Chakraborty,who is DYFI Secretary and CM Manik Sarkar's right hand.
Receiving him from the Agartala airport, the leaders and the supports of the ruling party also held a colourful bike rally, which moved across several parts of the state.
As a part of the rally, CPI (M) General secretary Sitaram Yechuri was also felicitated by the people at Usha Bazaar, Notun Nagar, Gurkhbosti and other places.
However, the colourful motor cycle rally escorted him up to party headquarters at Melarmath area of Agartala.
The anti-communalism convention, sponsored by the Tripura Anti-war Platform headed by senior leaders MP Snakar Prasad Dutta. Chief minister Manik Sarkar, minister for minority affairs of Tripura, Shahid Chowdhury along other top leaders of the party will also address the convention on Sunday afternoon.
The convention is occasioned by the rise in communalism across the country after the advent of BJP-led NDA government in power. Sitaram Yechuri's visit on Sunday is considered significant because this will be his first visit to the state after being elected as general secretary of the CPI (M) in the party Congress held early this year.
Sitaram Yechury (born August 12, 1952) is an Indian politician and a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was elected as its General Secretary on 19 April 2015. He is a member of the politburo of CPI (M) and the party's Parliamentary group leader.
