AGARTALA, August 21 (TIWN): The Union Minister for human resources development Smriti Irani had sought states’ opinion in a written response to take up a final decision regarding ‘No detention’ policy in schools saying that the policy is adversely affecting learning and there has been a proposal to reverse it. The Tripura government was opposing the policy being proposed by Union Minister.
State higher education minister Tapan Chakroborty has met Irani for the first time at New Delhi during the meeting of newly reconstituted Central Advisory Board of Education, or CABE, under the NDA government.
State Education Ministers and secretaries along with academicians and nominated members of CABE attended the meeting.
According to the official sources Chakroborty issuing the policy was in opinion that there has been a growing refrain against the no-detention policy till Class 8 in schools, a provision of the Right to Education Act (RTE), 2009, framed by the erstwhile UPA government.
The source added by November, the state and the Centre's representatives meeting was called to discuss first draft of New Education Policy, which will be ready by December this year.
Besides, Chakroborty also raised the issue of the slash in education fund for Tripura and urged the Union Ministry to take up the issue at the earliest in view of getting better education infrastructures for the state.
The state separate university issue was also taken up in the meeting at Delhi where Chakroborty urged the Ministry for further approval to the university so that the academic session by 2016. However, in view if getting the education system expanded in state the government had decided to set up state university.
The university would be set up in the MBB College campus and all are almost readied. “The state government would be now fully engaged to complete the rest of the works comprising of getting ready the academic block and others,” said Chakroborty.
