AGARTALA, August 3 (TIWN): Acting on a tip of secret source, west police on Sunday arrested 8 people in allegation of gambling from Battala Restaurant lane.
Altogether eight persons were arrested with charges of indulging in gambling and stake money of Rs. 38,000 in cash. However, along with cash police arrested 4 notebooks, 5 tokens, 6 pens, 7 mobile were seized from at Battala market, heart of capital city Agartala this afternoon.
Based on specific inputs provided by secret sources, a vast contingent of police headed by police personnel of west police station Shyama Das and Bipin Debbarma conducted an anti-gambling operation at Battala market this afternoon. During the tip-off search, police arrested 9 gamblers with stake money of Rs. 38,000 in cash and 4 notebooks, 5 tokens, 6 pens, 7 mobile from the spots.
The nine arrested gamblers are; NImai Singh,Abdul latif Mia, Ratan Das, Dulal Bhandari, Tapan Singh, Somen Bhattacharjee, Rajiv Saha and Kamalesh Rudra.
Several other gamblers fled away when police raided the area. A large section of youths including schools goers and aged persons are being addicted bitterly in gambling and drugs. And to retain them in normal life, police are playing active role in this regard, said police. More such drives will be conducted in the different parts of the city in future, added police.
Police would register a complaint against the arrested gamblers and would produce before the court on Monday, said an official source.
