NEW DELHI / AGARTALA, June 2 (TIWN): Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced that state-owned operator BSNL will provide nationwide free roaming service starting June 15.He also said that the government will ensure that Wi-Fi spots powered by BSNL are operational in major tourist spots in the next two years.
The government plans to set up 2,500 Wi-Fi spots this year alone. The NDA government is taking many steps to make BSNL profitable again. In this regard, Prasad also announced that BSNL has registered a 2.1% increase in revenue in the last financial year. Full mobile portability will be given from July, the Ravi Shankar Prasad said, while announcing the achievements of his ministry as part of the programmes to mark the Narendra Modi government's first year in office.
In May, BSNL had slashed roaming tariff by up to 40% for its prepaid and postpaid mobile connection following a telecom tariff order issued by the Trai. It has also made night calling free from landline phones.
