AGARTALA, May 25 (TIWN): With an aim to meet the rush of passengers here in the capital city Agartala the Tripura High Court during the year 2014 asked the State govt. to introduce 100 new city buses. However following this to meet the increasing demand of the city passengers the state govt. has recently planned to introduce 100 new buses proposed to ply by the month of June this year.
State Minister for Urban Development Manik Dey recently talking to the reporters at the civil secretariat said that the state govt. has decided to ply 100 city buses across the AMC areas of the state. The buses were sanctioned by the central govt. under the Jawaharlal Neheru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) scheme. The buses were sanctioned with a coast of Rs. 35 crore.
The buses scheduled to be plied under the JNNURM are expected to be operated by CNG.
During the year 2014, the Union Ministry for Urban Development (UD) sanctioned 100 additional buses for Tripura as a part of strengthening its public transport network. A project of Rs. 35 crores was sanctioned to the state to operationalize 100 buses for the city bus project functional in Agartala city and its suburbs.
The Ministry of Urban Development had sanctioned 1080 buses to 13 cities across seven states of the country under its Jawaharlal Nehru urban renewal Mission (JNNURM) project on January 01, 2014.
It is worthy to mention here that social organization Arpan filed a case on public interest with 24 point proposal. Reviewing the 24 point proposals the Chief Justice of High Court ordered the State Government to arrange to start functioning of 100 new buses and to operate 100 metre auto rickshaws at Agartala.
However on another issue of the petitioner it was said that the Public transport system should be strengthen in service mode and bus stoppage on at least 35 places.
