Agartala, Sep 18 (TIWN): After years of waiting, Agartala’s much-anticipated Howrah Riverfront Development Project is finally set to open to the public, with Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha scheduled to formally inaugurate the project on September 22.

Developed along the banks of the Howrah River, the ambitious project aims to transform a once-neglected stretch of the city’s riverfront into a modern public space combining recreation, fitness, leisure and tourism.

The project was undertaken by Agartala Smart City Limited at an estimated cost of around ?100 crore, with work beginning in 2021. The development covers nearly two kilometres of riverbank, from Steel Bridge to Dashamighat, where extensive beautification and infrastructure development have been carried out.

The revamped riverfront is expected to offer residents and visitors a new space to spend time by the river, while also creating opportunities for walking, exercise, recreation and tourism. The project is being viewed as part of the broader effort to modernise Agartala and make better use of its urban landscape and natural assets.

For years, large portions of the Howrah riverbank remained underutilised despite the river’s central place in the city’s geography. The riverfront project seeks to change that by combining urban development with a more accessible and attractive public environment.

With the inauguration now approaching, preparations have entered the final stage. Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder inspected the project on Friday, reviewing the arrangements and the overall readiness of the site ahead of the formal launch.

The September 22 inauguration will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Howrah riverbank, turning a previously overlooked stretch into one of Agartala’s new public destinations.
