AGARTALA, Sep 18 (TIWN): The Sarat Sanskriti Parishad observed the 150th birth anniversary of renowned Bengali writer and humanist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay in front of the historic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala today.

The programme was organised to remember the literary legacy and humanistic vision of one of Bengal’s most widely read authors. Members of the Parishad and cultural enthusiasts paid tribute to Sarat Chandra and recalled his contribution to Bengali literature.

Born on September 15, 1876, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay remains one of the most influential figures in Bengali literature. His writings focused heavily on ordinary people and the social realities of his time, addressing issues such as poverty, social inequality, relationships, injustice and the position of women.

His major works, including Devdas, Srikanta, Pather Dabi, Parineeta, Charitraheen and Palli Samaj, have continued to find readers across generations. Several of his works have also been adapted into films and translated into different Indian languages.

What distinguished Sarat Chandra's writing was his ability to bring the struggles of everyday people into the centre of literature. His characters often challenged social conventions, while his portrayal of women reflected questions of dignity, individuality and social restrictions.

The 150th birth anniversary observance in Agartala also served as an opportunity to reconnect the younger generation with the writer’s literary heritage and the human values reflected in his works.

With Ujjayanta Palace providing the backdrop, the Sharat Sanskriti Parishad’s programme commemorated not only a celebrated Bengali author but also a writer whose stories continue to speak to the experiences and emotions of ordinary people.
