KAMALPUR, Sep 14 (TIWN): A daring burglary at an Anganwadi centre in the Kabiraj Tila area under Kachuchhara police station in Kamalpur subdivision has triggered concern among local residents, with thieves allegedly breaking open the centre’s lock and fleeing with essential equipment.

The incident was reported at Salema Colony No. 2 Anganwadi Centre, where unidentified thieves allegedly entered the premises under the cover of darkness and stole two gas cylinders, an inverter and wires belonging to the centre’s solar power system.

The theft came to light on Monday morning when the Anganwadi worker arrived at the centre as usual and found the door lock broken. On entering the premises, she found materials scattered inside and realized that the centre had been targeted.

Local residents were informed immediately, following which the matter was brought to the attention of the Kachuchhara police and the concerned Gram Panchayat head. The Panchayat head, along with local residents, reached the spot, while police subsequently inspected the broken lock and the condition of the centre.

Police have begun an investigation, but the exact timing of the burglary and the identities of those involved remain unknown.

The incident has also brought attention to concerns over the centre’s security. According to the Anganwadi worker, the lock had reportedly shown signs of tampering on several occasions even before the theft. At times, it was found disturbed or bent, raising questions over whether the warning signs were adequately addressed.

Residents said that people often gather around the centre in the evenings, while the area becomes relatively deserted later at night. However, there is no confirmation that those gatherings have any connection with the burglary.

Beyond the theft, the incident has highlighted longstanding infrastructure and staffing problems at the centre. The Anganwadi worker reportedly has been managing the centre without a helper for an extended period, including looking after children and handling routine responsibilities alone.
