AGARTALS, Sep 1 (TIWN): The CPI(M) Melaghar Sub-Divisional Committee organized a rally in Melaghar Bazar without permission, leading to a scuffle with police. Party leaders claimed they had applied for permission, but it was denied.
The rally aimed to highlight local issues and protest the attack on a CPI(M) leader during a recent event. The procession started from Lalmeeya Chowmuhani and proceeded through Melaghar Bazar, but police intervened when it reached Netaji Chowmuhani, demanding to see permission documents.
The situation was diffused after intervention by local MLA Shyamal Chakraborty. Police have reportedly filed cases against some protesters, citing disobedience and assault on police personnel. CPI(M) district committee member Ahidur Rahman criticized the police for selectively enforcing rules, allowing the ruling party to hold events without permission while targeting opposition parties.
