AGARTALA, Aug 9 (TIWN): "We tie Rakhi to our Hindu brothers every year here," said Moumita Akter Sultana, the angel-eyed little girl at Noabadi area in Agartala, where dozens of kids gathered to celebrate Rakhi-Bandhan festival. Every year, the people of Paschim Noabadi, where both Hindus and Muslims live together, observe this day, and this year also it was not exceptional. Kids from both communities gathered to celebrate the day as a part of a unity ritual. "Today, on the occasion of Rakhi Purnima, Muslim sisters celebrate Rakhi Purnima by putting Rakhi on the hands of Hindu brothers, while Hindu sisters celebrate this day by putting Rakhi on the hands of Muslim brothers. This is how the Rakhi Purnima festival is celebrated every year," said a local man to the media.
"It was Rabindranath Tagore who initiated the importance of Rakhi Bandhan amid the fight against the British when the importance of national unity was felt, and we have to continue the tradition," he added.
