Kailashahar, July 14, 2025 (TIWN): In line with statewide protests, the Unakoti district Congress Committee in Kailashahar staged a massive demonstration and dharna against the recent electricity tariff hike and the imposition of smart meters.
Led by District Congress President Badruz Zaman and Pradesh Congress Committee member Rudrendra Bhattacharjee, the protesters marched through the streets, culminating at the Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Electricity Office.
The protesters vehemently opposed the privatization of electricity services, citing the detrimental impact on common people. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of smart meters and the rollback of exorbitant electricity bills. The Congress leaders criticized the BJP government's alleged anti-people policies, highlighting the party's 2018 election promise of providing 50 units of free electricity, which has remained unfulfilled.
District Congress President Badruz Zaman stated, "The BJP government's imposition of smart meters and excessive electricity bills is a clear case of deception and anti-people policy. We demand the immediate withdrawal of smart meters and excessive electricity tariffs. The state government should provide 200 units of free electricity to every household. Otherwise, we will be forced to launch a massive movement." The protesters resolved to continue their agitation until their demands are met.
