AGARTALA, June 6 (TIWN): A hand grenade’s seizure has triggered tension in the Agartala Border Gol Bazar area. On-duty fireman Amal Chakraborty first spotted the grenade just a few feet away from his Gol Bazar fire brigade office and informed the police and 112 about it. Talking to the fireman whose instant action made the recovery possible, Chakraborty said, “During my usual duty hours, I was looking around the area, and this object drew my attention. Immediately, I called the East Agartala PS OC, but he was unable to receive the call at that time. So I informed the outpost.”
“From the outpost, staff were sent. I informed the Gol Bazar OC and called the 112 number, and an additional team was also sent from there. The rest of the matter was unknown to us and taken care of by the team,” Chakraborty said.
“After observing, the PS staff said it is a hand grenade, and also the SB staff are inspecting it. The bomb squad team is on the way to check it,” the fireman said.
“It looks like an old grenade as it was covered with mud and dirt, but whether it is active or inactive, it would be only known after the bomb squad’s inspection. I thought it was my duty to keep a keen eye around the area, and I did so. The rest of the matter will be taken care of by the appropriate authority,” said Chakraborty.
Later, a senior police officer told the media that there is no threat as the bomb is likely damaged, but it would be taken to a safer place. Police will also investigate how the bomb got there.
