AGARTALA, Aug 23 (TIWN): Tripura BJP’s political ally IPFT party staged a protest at Delhi Jantar Mantar seeking a separate state for tribals. The protest marked IPFT’s annual statehood day observation which it observed every year on August 23rd. Talking to media at Jantar Mantar, IPFT President Prem Kumar Reang said, “We (ST population) were always majority in number in Tripura until 1971 when Govt of India accepted the refugees as Indian. We respect the decision of the government but now we want a separate state covering the ST reserved ADC areas.”
“Our protest is peaceful and our demand is political, not against anyone. In various states in India separate state demands are being raised and we too demand separate state for us,” said Reang.
IPFT has been a political partner of BJP since 2018 election and hold one Ministry in the cabinet. Apart from IPFT, another regional party Tipra Motha is also BJP’s ally sharing the cabinet ministry. Even though BJP is aligned with these parties politically but clearly stated, it does not support the separate land demand of the parties.
