AGARTALA/ NEW DELHI, July 1 (TIWN): As India has launched its new three criminal laws, in Tripura also, training, and awareness programs were conducted by police officers. Addressing the police personnel, SP West Kiran Kumar said, “The new laws are pro-victim and there are some changes for example, a judge can punish someone with community punishment for small crimes. Such kind of punishment was not in India and existed only in the Western and European countries. However, there are strict laws, for example, if a minor of 12 or below is raped, the rapist will be sentenced to death.” When SP Kiran Kumar mentioned various laws and new rules, it can be mentioned here that community punishment is not mandatory for any petty crime but it depends on the judge whether to punish the convict with 2 years in jail, fine or community punishment.
Experts said, that in case of defamations, most likely community punishment can be applicable.
