Agartala, Jan 25 (TIWN):Modi government plan to declare Bhagwad Gita as national book is a sinister design to alter secular character of the Constitution, claimed Tripura Minister of Health, PWD and Revenue. He was speaking in a seminar “ Democracy, Secular, Empowerment of People and Tripura†organized on the occasion final day of statehood celebration commenced from 21 January here at Umkanta Academy today evening.
"You cannot impose one holy book as the national book," Mr. Choudhury said, adding India is a multi-religion and multi-lingual society where different sections hold various scriptures as holy."There is a sinister design to alter secular fabric and secular character of the Constitution, the holy book for India is its Constitution that guarantees right of equality to all” he said.
Speaking on democracy. he said that the only time when Indian democracy was undermined was in 1975 when the then Indian Prime minister Indira Gandhi decided to subvert democracy and imposed internal emergency on June 25, 1975. Indira’s desperation to stick to power at any cost proved detrimental to the image of Indian democracy and that one decision of Indira Gandhi turned out to be a blot on the otherwise excellent record of Indian democratic set up.
