Agartala, January 17 (TIWN): Altogether nine persons were booked with the charges of indulging in gambling and stake money of Rs. 13,500 in cash, 13 notebooks were seized from at Battala market, heart of capital city Agartala this morning.
Based on specific inputs provided by DIB, a vast contingent of police headed by Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar- Rajendra Datta conducted an anti-gambling operation at Battala market this morning. During the tip-off search, police in civil dress booked 9 gamblers with stake money of Rs. 13,500 in cash and 13 note books from the spots.
The nine arrested gamblers are; Suman Miah, Bhajan Deb, Shanti Paul, Sankar Majumder, Ashis Chowhan, Harisankar Sutradhar, Rama Prasad Dey, Khokan Bhowmik and Ranjit Debnath.
“Several other gamblers fled away when police raided the area. A large section of youths including schools goers and aged persons are being addicted bitterly in gambling and drugs. And to retain them in normal life, police are playing active role in this regard”, said police. More such drives will be conducted in the different parts of the city in future, added police.
Police would register a suo-moto complaint against the arrested gamblers and would produce before the court on tomorrow, said an official source.
