Agartala, September 23 (TIWN): The state government requested the centre to grant support for purchasing more hybrid cattle for boosting milk production in Trioura at a recent meeting with Union Minister for Agriculture and animal resources Radha Mohan Singh and Minister for State (MoS) Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan.
A highly placed source in the Department for Animal Resource Development today said that the union minister denied the state's plea and suggested to use local breeds of livestock rather.
The source said that Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh denounced use of hybrid cows saying that milk produced by these varieties were often harmful for human health.
"They said that milk produced by local varieties of cattle in India were found to contain A2 beta tyoe protein which were beneficial for human body while milk produced by hybrid varieties contained harmful A1 beta type protein", a source in the state Animal resource development department said.
The source further informed that the centre snobbed a proposal to provide extended subsidy support for livestock farmers of Tripura.
Tripura is currently running behind its perspective plan of milk production.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar recently criticised the department saying that the authroities had performed poorly in milk production.
The state was stated in a recent report to be producing an averae pf 83 gm milk per capita per day. The national average stands at 290 gm per capita per day.
