AGARTALA, March 10 (TIWN): Without any contest Jishnu Debbarma has won the Charilam constituency election as CPI-M has decided to withdraw their candidate's name. The announcement was done after General Secretary Sitaram Yechury had arrived in the state. In a letter to the CEO Sriram Taranikanti, CPI-M wrote, "In our earlier memorandum we had categorically mentioned the names of 11 party offices looted, vandalized or set on fire..........19 leaders were injured physically......The CPI-M candidate of Charilam was bound to stay outside the constituency...thus after a meeting held at 12 PM on March 10 we have decided to withdraw the nomination of the left front sponsored candidate from this election'. However, question raising, can a party withdraw candidate's name after the date is extended ?
On the background of the withdrawal of candidate's name, on March-8 CPI-M had demanded the rescheduling of Charilam Election which is to be conducted on March 8.
"Today we have complained about the ongoing violence in Tripura to the CEO Sriram Taranikanti. We have also demanded to reschedule the Charilam Election as CPI-M activists are unable to come out of home. Our Charilam candidate Palash Debbarma is now out of Charilam", he said.
CPI-M has also announced total 1704 people have lost their houses and party offices have been burnt, vandalized. Total 193 houses were also burnt.
In protest of the alleged violence, CPI-M also boycotted the searing-in ceremony of the BJP Govt.
However, today finally CPI-M has given up the election.
