Socio-economic problems attract minor girls to sex racket

AGARTALA / UDAIPUR, August 21 (TIWN): In the absence of proper guidelines and Act to prevent incidents like prostitution , rose to an alarming proportion recently, police administration can not take any proper action even if women are caught red handed. Police too are now worried about the recent increase of involvement of a large number of minor girls in this profession. What is interesting to see is the total silent attitude of Woman Commission and its members. In recent days number of girls, mostly minors, have been caught by the police in different parts of the state from different hotels and rest houses.

Alarmingly even the State Govt run rest houses too are not far away from this as far as shelter is concerned. As a result of it a large number of influential groups are attracting a number of young girls to the profession.

It is learnt that in places like Agartala,Udaipur, Karbook, Jampuijala, Teliamura, Amabasa, Sonamura, Sabroom, Tulasikhar, Killa, Bhangmun and some other remote areas more and more tribal and Muslim girls are coming to this heinous profession that can only lead them to a dangerous future. In most of the cases the girls who become victims are from very poor families. Deep rooted poverty encourages them to take this profession as a means if living their lives in comfort far from their families . And taking advantages of their poverty many over ground agents of the sex racket syndicate are now tepnting these girls with lucrative and false promises. Denied if education and comfort I'd day to day life these girls are easily fallen prey to such promises. Once they come to this field, there is no way back for them. Thus, many girls with plenty promises become the so called ' street girls'. Society treats them badly and they remain isolated from society even before their life is fully bloomed.

In this connection TIWN had a telephonic chat with Officer In charge of Woman Police Station, Udaipur and she said," Actually due to some changes in police Act we cannot take action or even arrest the persons involved in prostitution. The previous act which was active before 2007 was helpful but now we are having a tough time in dealing with such cases." But Chairperson of Tripura Woman Commission Purnima Roy has quite different views in this case. Speaking to TIWN over telephone Purnima Roy said," Whenever, we hear of such cases our team investigate in such cases. We send our suggestions to the police and Police has the biggest role to play. Yes, a few changes have been made in police act but this does not mean that police cannot arrest when specific reports of crimes are registered. At least police should investigate with sincerity when minor girls get involved in such profession. " However, she agreed that they cannot instruct police or arrest any one but if any body finds that police does not take any action, Woman Commission should be informed.

Purnima Roy said," If police remains inactive, I would suggest people to write to Woman Commission . We will take this matter to higher police officials. Even Police Commission is there to deal with such social problems." Actually police too is under tremendous pressure from the political fields. In many cases it is seen that the over ground agents of prostitutions have strong political backing. And thus , though raids are done but considering the recent increase in such back door profession, these can be counted on fingers. There is no denying of the fact that in remote areas people find it hard to earn bread twice a day. And for those families it is really impossible to provide all the basic amenities of life. And in this techno world when every wants the world in his or her drawing room, living in poverty is really a set back for the Gen Y. And this makes the job of the over ground agents quite easier as they can convince the girls of poor families living in remote areas to come to this profession as money matters most. In some cases cases one cannot also deny the 'Behind the curtains' deal between police and hotel owners. And thus the problem is taking its serious shape at an increasing rate.
