Agartala, Oct 9 (TIWN) succumbing to the pressure of High Court, civil society and law makers, the Tripura government suspended four doctors and four nurses of the government run medical college and hospital here after a patient's lower abdomen was opened and urethra operated on, instead of a mouth biopsy.

Health department director Dr Satya Ranjan Debbarma said : "The department following an inquiry earlier handed out show cause notices last month to four doctors and four nurses of the Gobinda Ballav Pant Government Medical College and Hospital. After receiving unsubstantiated and unsatisfactory replies, the government has decided to suspend them."

This is for the first time that such a large number of government health personnel in the state have been suspended for unprofessional works. The erroneous operation occurred early last month.

After a huge pandemonium, Tripura Health and School Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty told the state assembly on Sept 30 that the government would take stringent exemplary action against the accused doctors and nurses.

The minister had said the fault occurred as the medical college had another patient by the same name (from western Tripura), who was admitted with urethra-related troubles.

The issue rocked the three-day monsoon session of the Tripura assembly. Civil society groups also exerted pressure on the government in the matter. The government thus initiated a probe headed by Dr Debbarma.

After the recommendation of senior doctors, 53-years-old Ratan Das, a small-time businessman from southern Tripura, was admitted to the government medical college and hospital first week of September. He was to undergo a biopsy of his mouth. But the doctors of the medical college conducted surgery on his lower abdomen and urethra instead, in the second week of September.

Another patient by the same name, Ratan Das (45) with abdomen and urethra-related problems was also admitted to the hospital, the minister said.

Trader Ratan Das’s wife Jhulan Das filed a complaint with the police, health minister and other authorities, urging action against the doctors and the medical staff responsible for the blunder.

The health minister had assured the assembly that if necessary the government would take care of the further treatment of trader Ratan Das, who has now almost recovered.

The police in the East Kotwali police station are also probing the matter.

Cutting across party lines, legislators of both the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist and the main opposition Congress demanded strict action against the negligent doctors and medical staff, so that such incidents do not happen yet again.

The doctors and nurses suspended by the government include, Dr Nilotpal Chakma, Dr Saumen Debbarma, Dr Niladri Sengupta, Dr Biswajit Sutradhar, Ms Archana Basak, Ms Gopa Debroy, Ms Uma Chakraborty and Ms Niharika Koloi.

Recently the Tripura High Court has in another case of wrong treatments of a patient, has reprimanded the medical college and hospital authorities, health department and others.

The High Court headed by Chief Justice Deepak Gupta asked the health department to undertaken certain steps to stop negligence of doctors, medical staffs and other and to take preventive measures for providing better quality services in the hospitals.
