One more infected by Japanese Encephalitis, central expert continues visit in affected area

AGARTALA, July 31 (TIWN): One more patient was diagnosed to have contacted Japanese Encephalitis in the state today raising the infected population to five. Sefali Sarkar (20), wife of Prabhash Sarkar from 60 card area in Gandacherra sub-division today called in sick with Japanese Encephalitis. She was admitted at the Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Hospital. Health Minister Badal Chowdhury earlier said that three patients were identified as suffering from encephalitis and had returned home after receiving proper treatment at the GB Panth hospital here.

Daniel Tripura (2) from Ultacherra of Gandacherra sub-division, the fourth patient who was confirmed to have been infected by Japanese Encephalitis, is under treatment at GB Hospital since July 24. A total of fourteen cases of Japanese Encephalitis and ten cases of dengue were identified in the state last year. All infected patients were treated and successfully cured in government hospitals, a highly placed source in the Department of Health and Family Welfare said. The state government is in touch with National Institute of Virology and the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) to combat such diseases, the source said.

A team of vector borne disease experts headed by National Vector Borne Disease Control Program Joint Director Dr. VK Raina today visited interior villages of Gandacherra and Raishyabari sub-divisions in Dhalai district. The team earlier visited areas of Belonia and Shantirbazaar sub-divisions in South Tripura district on Wednesday as a part of the fact finding mission in the wake of Japanese Encephalitis outbreak.

The team today visited Girachandrapara and few adjoining villages of Gandacherra; they made door-to-door visits in the villages and collected samples for testing in laboratories back in Delhi, a source said.

An official communiqué from the state Health Department said later this evening that none was reported to have died from malaria across the state on Thursday. The communiqué said that 3,041 persons freshly called in sick across the state today among whom 439 were diagnosed to be infected with malaria parasite. A total of 41,822 persons were confirmed to have contacted malaria in the state till date since largescale institutional treatment and diagnosis started in the wake of malaria outbreak earlier in June this year.
