AGARTALA, 31 July (TIWN): Mosquitos causing dengue are present in Agartala, a recent report from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) said. While the initial malaria outbreak surfaced up in June, a central delegation from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program and Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) visited the state from Delhi and Dibrugarh. An entomologist present in the team reportedly collected mosquito samples to be tested later.

According to sources, the experts found the samples confirmed to be Aedes aegypti – the mosquito species liable for causing dengue in Agartala city and its suburbs. The micro-biology department at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) was recently asked to stay on high alert in the wake of reports from the ICMR about presence of dengue mosquitos in Agartala city.

A recent entomological survey found presence of dengue and culex vishnoi mosquitos – carriers of dengue and Japanese Encephalitis in the state. The presence of such mosquito species as close as Agartala has caused panic in the hospitals and other healthcare institutions. Sources said that the hospital authorities were put on high alert to avoid any contact of mosquitos with patients under treatment at the concerned centers.

Asked about the latest status of diagnosing dengue and Japanese Encephalitis, the source said that initial symptoms of dengue, Japanese Encephalitis and malaria were similar which caused serious confusion in determining the disease unless proper testing kits were used. The state government is currently using malaria RDT kits alone.

The government asked the central authorities to supply RDT kits for testing patients suspected to have contacted dengue and Japanese Encephalitis as well, the source said. It added that few RDT kits for Japanese Encephalitis were supplied to the state Health Department recently.
