AGARTALA, Oct 27 (TIWN): Tension high at Tripura border areas ahead of Kali Puja, as rampant smuggling of Phensedyl and Corex are much prevalent through border areas. However, leaving no scope for illegal activities BSF seized around Rs. 72 thousands Phensedyl & Eskuf syrups from Nischintapur, near Agartala on Thursday. After a successful raid held by BSF Jawans, it was said that an amount of Rs. 43,000 Phensedyl and Eskuf syrup of Rs. 14,880/- and thus items of totaling Rs. 71, 96, 995 /- were seized by BSF. It was earlier said by BSF 159th Commandant to TIWN that during the Kali Puja, borders will be kept under tight vigilance for 24 X 7 hrs. However, due to the unfencing areas of Tripura borders which are yet 35 % left without sealing have been acting like threats against the safety of the public here. Taking the opportunity smugglers are rampantly doing illegal business throughout the year, although few are nabbed by BSF. On Thursday 2 persons were arrested, although BSF didn’t mention their names yet.

The festive season are more targeted in state for smuggling of illegal items. On the issue of narcotics, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances. The smuggling of Phensedyl and cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine gained momentum after the Durga Puja, said a highly placed police sources.

Large parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar are emerging as drug consuming zones, and bordering areas of Tripura are contributing to the fast-emerging drugs market, the source mentioned.

People thought drug-crime rates may decrease this time, but with this incident it shows what is the condition of state’s law and order. Although DGP K Nagraj claimed that Tripura will remain crime free during festive season, but this is the reality of state grown level and so called high alerts.

Festivity which has become almost like a lunatic party vacation for young generation, is using as the highest  business period for a section of shop-keepers who not only sell only drugs, but they sell liquors (illegally) at double price especially after midnight.
