AGARTALA, Aug 25 (TIWN): Once smooth going Agartala city is yet to recover from the shock of the IPFT’s massive violence which was caused during IPFT’s mass rally on August 23.Almost two days have passed from the incident, but Agartala city is yet to return back to normalcy. However sensing the intensity of the situation, the West district administration has imposed prohibitry orders under Section-144 all over Agartala town to prevent illegal gathering of people. It is to be mentioned here that Army Jawans are still continuing with their patrolling at different parts of Agartala city to avoid any untoward incident. The incident has left a severe panic among the common people of Agartala. Unprecedented riot erupted on Tuesday in the Agartala city during IPFT’s massive rally in demand of Twipraland and all of a sudden started rampaging shops, bikes, cars, houses sparking a riot between the tribals and the non- tribals community following the attacks and counter attack on each other.Shocking to the fact is that when the violence erupted during IPFT’s mass rally Civil and Police Administration for some reason appeared incapable and inept to control the situation which has further fuel the situation in the state.
In an incident of large scale violence the unruly activists of IPFT created an uprising situation in the capital city on Tuesday.
As a result at least 40 persons injured including woman, children, police personnel and reporter.
The violence broke out around noon when a non-tribal woman and her child were trying to cross a road through a gap in the rally. When they were trying to do so, some IPFT supporters attacked them, injuring them grievously. Later, sections of those in the rally went on the rampage, attacking pedestrians and shopkeepers and torching vehicles.
Retaliation by the non-tribals followed soon when news about the attack on the mother-child duo spread far and wide.
Official sources said Section 144 of the CrPC had been imposed in Agartala to thwart any untoward incident. The situation was said to be tense but under control.
Between 1984 and 2008, August 23 had been observed as ADC (Autonomous District Council) formation day. But from 2009, the IPFT has been observing the day as separate statehood demand day. The clashes on Tuesday coincided with by-election under Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council in the Simna-Tamakari seat.
The BJP criticised the state’s Left Front government for the clashes. The incident occurred due to failure of the administration. And what made the government to hold the by-elections today when it was aware of the IPFT’s statehood demand programme?
Meanwhile, the CPIM alleged that the entire situation is pre-planned to flare up communal violence in Tripura by IPFT and in which TMC and BJP is also helping them.
