KAMALPUR, March 29 (TIWN): The annual saga of drinking water scarcity once again hit the hilly terrains of Saikarbari and Sanaiya Reang Para under Setrai VC this year too. At the advent of the dry spell the people there had to struggle to meet their need of drinking water. And their pleas to remedy the situation, failed to stir the authority.

According to the opinion of the local people like Thanga Darlong, Lalpuiya Darlong and many others, the Old Saikar and New Saikar remained to be most affected areas.

They further told that, every year they had to suffer for drinking water during the season. And every year, the department came forward to their rescue in the rainy season, when the problem got solved itself.

Almost three years ago, the DWS Kamalpur division set a motor-run water supply system for the hilly terrain of the Saikarbari area situated at the foothills of Longthorai hills on the Halhali-Fatikroy NEC road. The system was set to supply drinking water to both Old Saikar and New Saikar.

Now, New Saikar being around the level of the NEC road, the supply of water became easy. And the supply of water to lofty Old Saikar was controlled by the water fetching motor. For smooth supply and adequate storage, two storage tanks were also built. The locales, however, opposed the work due to its low quality and demanded upgraded quality works.

However, the system could provide smooth supply for almost one year and then problems started to emerge. The first storage tank at the road level from which water was distributed to the over head tank of the Old Saikar, was smaller than the overhead tank.

Further, the system preserving water to both the tanks was made inactivated by the department even after several oppose of the locales. Moreover, the pipes set for distributing water to the tanks turned inactive for several leakages.

Now, the locales knocked the DWS division several times in last fortnight to remedy the situation. But, the officials remained standstill.
