10 agreements might sign during PM Modi visit to get Teesta water sharing : Tripura CM likely to accompany Modi in upcoming June 6-7 Bangladesh visit

AGARTALA / DHAKA/ NEW DELHI, May 27 (TIWN): Nearly 10 to 12 agreements and MOU on bilateral trade, road transport, river communication, coastal shipping, education, culture and marine resources are likely to be signed during the proposed visit of Indian Premier Narendra Modi. Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, whose visit is also a vital factor in connection with the signing of Teesta Water Sharing Treaty, likely to accompany Modi. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also likely to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian Prime Minister will arrive in Dhaka on a two-day official visit on June 6, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Bangladesh said on Tuesday. Dhaka expects this visit (June 6 -7) will strengthen the 'excellent' bilateral relations.Though the Indian Premier had planned to visit Bangladesh since his assumption of office in May last year, But Prime Minister apparently unable to visit Dhaka due to two unresolved Issues - the Teesta Water-Sharing, and ratification of Land Boundary Agreement. MoFA , Bangladesh, statement said Modi would hold official talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on bilateral issues during the visit. He will also meet President Md Abdul Hamid.

The External Affairs Ministry of India yesterday also announced Modi's visit, saying the visit is at the invitation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."The visit reflects the importance attached by India to the bilateral relationship. The visit is expected to further expand the cordial and cooperative relationship between the  two countries and strengthen the ties of friendship and trust between India and Bangladesh," the External Affairs Ministry statement said.

Bangladesh Foreign Office sources said that around 10 to 12 agreements and MoU on bilateral trade, road transport, river communication, coastal shipping, education, culture and marine resources are likely to be signed during the visit of Indian Premier.Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, whose visit is also a vital factor in connection with the signing. Teesta Water Sharing Treaty, likely to accompany Modi.

Dhaka said it was looking forward to Modi's upcoming visit hoping that the long-pending Teesta Pact will be inked during the trip besides expansion of cooperation in key areas of energy and connectivity. The Teesta deal was set to be inked during the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Bangladesh in 2011 but was postponed at the last minute due to objections by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.The Teesta water is crucial for Bangladesh, especially in the leanest period from December to March when the water flow often temporarily comes down to less than 1,000 cusecs from 5,000 cusecs every year. However, hailing the passage of a bill by parliament to operationally the Land Boundary Agreement that provides for exchange of enclaves between the two countries, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India  said "if you want a good border, you should have a good neighbour". Asked about illegal immigration from Bangladesh to India's North Eastern states, he said when enclaves residents were asked to choose citizenship, 95 percent of them preferred to stay in Bangladesh and only five percent chose India. Foreign Office sources said, increasing connectivity would get highest priority during Modi's visit.

 In line with the connectivity issue, India has already expressed its desire to construct Payra Deep Sea Port in Bangladesh.Delhi is also interested to get transit facility in 15 more routes through using Chittagong Port and Mongla Port.  At the same time, India wants to extend connectivity in river, rail and road communications to facilitate its people and goods to North-Eastern states.The government will confer the "Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award" to former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his special contribution to War of Independence in 1971. The honorary award is likely to be handed over to Modi, according to sources.
