AGARTALA, Jan 26 (TIWN): The five day long statehood celebration of Tripura which concluded on Sunday proved to be a flop show. Celebration started on 21st January at Umakanta school ground. To make the programme a grand success, no stone was left unturned by the state government, at least Rs 50 lakhs was drained from the state exchequer. From day one, Governor, Chief Minister and Senior Ministers of the state cabinet gave lectures on different issues relating to the development of the state. But presence of people during five days of the programme was very low, chairs were seen empty in all five days. Even mentiom of two stalwart of CPI (M ) party leaders and former chief ministers Nirpen Chakrabroty and Dashrath Deb was found missing. This issue drew flak among the people. The five day programme only highlighted Manik Sakar, more like selling his scam tainted 'CLEAN' image from day one till the end.
Earlier, statehood day used to be celebrated for one day, this year for the first time it was celebrated for five days. Cultural programmes ,exhibitions, competition, and many other programmes were organized to woo the people. But turn out was very poor.
In 1972, Tripura achieved the state hood till date the state had eight chief ministers. But in the five day programme only the role of chief minister Manik Sarkar was highlighted, as if all kind of developments in the state took place under his able leadership, his predecessors had done nothing.
Ruling CPI(M) is solely responsible for this flop show even though scam tainted Govt machinery made every effort to make it look successful. CM Manik Sarkar certainly missed the company of his beloved aide BDO Bimal Chakraborty. who 'unfortunately' languishing in Bisalgarh Jail for involvement in Rs. 50 Crore MGNREGA Scam.
Question are now raised, what benefit did common people get from the five day programme by spending more than Rs 50 lakh of public money, where 75 percent of people of the state are below poverty line.
