National Voters’ Day celebrated in Tripura, sports icon Dipa Karmakar felicitated

Agartala, January 25 (TIWN): In order to spread awareness among the voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process and to increase enrolment of new voters, National Voters’ Day was celebrated across Tripura throughout various programmes here on Sunday.

As part of the nationwide programme, State Election Commission (SEC) staged the main programme at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.

Chief Secretary G Kameswar Rao inaugurated the programme by lighting ceremonial lamp in presence of Chief Election Commissioner (CEO)- Ashutosh Jindal, State Election Commissioner S.K.Rakesh, District Magistrate (DM), West- Abhishek Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Sadar- Manik Lal Das, Election Commission’s icon and ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar and many other dignitaries.

During the inaugural ceremony, the State Election Commission felicitated gymnast Dipa Karmakar as an icon of Tripura’s election campaign. Chief Secretary G Kameswar Rao presented a bamboo crafted peacock to her.

After the inaugural session, the State Election Commission has distributed voter identity cards among the new voters at Rabindra Bhavan. A vast number of new voters thronged at Rabindra Bhavan since morning and collected their individual identity cards with enthusiasm.

The Election Commission has appointed ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar as Tripura state's election icon to popularize the election related matters on December 11, last.

Election Commission has appointed star gymnast Dipa Karmakar as Tripura state election icon. Dipa would campaign across Tripura to enroll more number of voters in the electoral list and cast more votes by the electorates.

The union government earlier decided to celebrate January 25 every year as 'National Voters' Day' to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process and it started from Jan 25, 2011 to mark the Election Commission’s foundation day.
