AGARTALA, Dec 18 (TIWN): Keeping the officials in slumber, few of the smugglers in collaboration with the jail staffs allegedly made the Bishalghar Central Jail into a safe heaven for consuming alcohol and ganja for last few months. A section of correctional home staffs are freely supplying huge quantity of foreign and country made liquors and cannabis. According to a local source, a section of jail staffs and prisoners consume foreign liquor and cannabis in the morning and evening without restraint. If anyone tries to protest it then he or she gets punishment, said source.According to the sources, local shops at Bishalghar market have been selling contraband items including cannabis and illicit syrups openly. But the police are not taking any remarkable steps to curb this illegal business due to close connection between police and the smugglers. The locals also alleged that, a few of the smugglers in collaboration with jail stuffs are free supplying narcotic items in the correctional home showing thumb to the prison officials. As a result, many of the convicted persons are being addicted instead of rectifying themselves.

Due to all the flourishing illegal trade, a large section of people right from school students, youths and old aged persons of that area are being addicted to consuming contraband items like phensedyl, corex and banned medicinal Capsules and tablets. Besides, the local sellers are also continuing illegal business by selling country made liquor at Bishalghar market, at a walking distance from police station, said locals.

Therefore a question is raised by the people, if a place for the confinement of people accused or convicted of a crime like prison is safe for consuming liquor and contraband items then how the convicted persons would be able to set right themselves during the punishment period?
