AGARTALA, Dec 15 (TIWN): CPI-M’s indigenous wing Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP) has moved to Supreme Court of India challenging Citizenship Amendment Act, calling it not only ‘undemocratic’ but harmful against whole Northeast. Addressing media, at Melarmath CPI-M State Headquarter, former MP cum Ganamukti Parishad President Jitendra Choudhury said that the Citizenship Amendment Act was a violation of the Instrument of Accession signed by the princely state to merge with the Union of India in 1949. Thus GMP has moved the Supreme Court against the “unconstitutional” Citizenship Act that for the first time allows citizenship on the basis of religion to six communities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Earlier, Jitendra Choudhury when was MP opposed inside and outside the Parliament against this Act which was Citizenship Amendment Bill (2016).The GMP leader described how like other Northeast States, Tripura witnessed violent protests against the Act.

“In 1971 when huge numbers of refugees came those were during emergency times neighboring country and another settlement was done. But what such happened now that the bill was needed without scrapping the existing settlement ?”, said Choudhury.

“We have challenged terrorism for 2 decades from 1980 to 2007-08. So many people died but when peace is returned, it is attempted to be violated”, said Jitendra Choudhury.

He slammed the Modi Govt for thinking Northeast people fool and saying no implementation of Citizenship act in inner permit areas or ADC areas but ended with lots of violence and losses.

ADC CEM Radhacharan Debbarma asked IPFT to make its stand clear on this act and asked whether IPFT will be protesting during the imposition of the act when the BJP-IPFT Govt itself will impose the act, which was nothing but display of the IPFT party’s “double role”?

Tripura was never under British rule and the State has already accommodated persecuted migrants from Bangladesh.

Tripura Royal scion Pradyot Manikya is also all set to file a petition challenging the controversial Citizenship Amendment bill dealing with refugee naturalisation in the Supreme Court.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, now approved by Parliament and awaiting presidential assent, offers a path to Indian citizenship for non-Muslim minority refugees who faced religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh.
