Flood threats likely to continue more 2 days : 17952 people rendering homeless, 61 relief camps opened

AGARTALA, July 15 (TIWN): Flood situation is now worsening in Tripura as 17,952 people right now are sheltered in 61 relief camps throughout state, according to Disaster Management Dept of Tripura. Relief camps have been opened at West Tripura (highest 46), Gomati, Unakoti, North, Khowai Districts. But there is no relief for next two days from flood and water logging as West District DM Sandeep Mahatme informed media that there are massive rainfall threats in next two days at a stress. Media and ground report however reported in the morning 12,000 families rendering homeless in the District whereas the fresh official data received from the DM office stated till yesterday night 1700 families took shelter in relief camps and total 30 relief camps have been opened. But right total relief camps are 61 and 17,952 people are bound to rush at relief camps. Rescue operations are going 24 hours and till yesterday night 7000 people including women and children took shelter which has now increased at 12,837. DM said, all possible helps will be given to the people. MLAs, political parties, social organizations have come forward to help the flood affected people.

Sufficient foods have been supplied. On the other side, added by flood, water-logging in the capital city due to poor drain management has paralyzed the city like every year. Talking to media, since yesterday common men have expressed resentment on both the previous and the current Govt as no Govt could end their miseries.

The situations are same in many Northeast states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram.

lood situation in Assam continues to deteriorate even further as the water level is rising at a speed of 2-3 cm per hour in Guwahati. River Brahmaputra that flows through the vital city of the northeastern state crossed danger mark on Monday.

Sadikul Haq of Central Water Commission told ANI, "Water is flowing 1.5 cm above danger level and it is increasing 2-3 cm per hour. The rising water level can be a danger for the city."

So far, 11 people have died in Assam floods this year while incessant rains continue to pound the state. 31 of the 33 districts in Assam have been affected by the current spell of heavy rain.

Over 26.5 lakh people have been affected in the flood situation that is worsening every hour.

PM Narendra Modi spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday and took stock of the flood situation in the state.

Sonowal briefed PM Modi about the situation in Assam while the Prime Minister assured Sonowal of all assistance from the central government in dealing with the situation.

Barpeta is the worst-hit district with 7.35 lakh people facing the flood fury, followed by Morigaon where 3.50 lakh people are hit. In Dhubri district, 3.38 lakh people are affected, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said.

About 70 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park, the habitat of the Great Indian Rhino and a world heritage site, has been affected too.

In Meghalaya, rising waters of the Brahmaputra and the Jinjiram rivers have life thrown out of gear for 1.14 lakh people across 164 villages.

In Tripura Deputy CM Jishnu Dev Barman today visited relief camps. 2 people died in Tripura due to rain and 3 died in storm led accident.
