‘It’s duty of the States to maintain law & order’ : Supreme Court condemns Mob-lynching, asks Centre to place report

AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Supreme Court has condemned the mob-lynching asking the State Govts to maintain the law and order of states. Supreme Court also made it clear that it’s the duty of the State Govt to maintain law and order at there further asking the Parliament to draft a law to stop mob-lynching. Pronouncing the judgment, Chief Justice Misra said that no one can take the law into their own hands or become a law unto himself.In a final hearing on Tuesday condemned mob lynching incidents across the country and urged Parliament to enact a law to deal with the crime that threatens rule of law and the country's social fabric. Issuing a slew of directions including preventive, remedial and punitive steps to deal with the crime, the court said that mobocracy will not be allowed. Asking the Centre to file a compliance report on its directions, the court adjourned the matter to August 20.

The judgment came on a petition seeking the apex court's intervention to curb the incidents of violence by the vigilante groups across the country. 

"It is the duty of the State to maintain law and order, social and pluralistic fabric of the society and the rule of law”, bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkqar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said. 

Eariler, opposition CPI-M State Secretary Bijan Dhar following the mob-lynching in state which claimed 3 lives told TIWN, “We don’t want President’s rule but Govt here should stable the law and order strictly”.

All oppositions including CPI-M, Congress and Trinamool have slammed state’s Minister Ratan Lal Nath for promoting rumours on kidney smuggling which led the whole lynching episode.

On June 28 morning, in child trafficking allegation, Jahir Khan of has been killed, whereas Guljar Khan of Bihar and Khurshid Khan of Bihar were injured at Sedhai, Mohonpur.  In the afternoon another Sukanta Chakraborty was killed at Sabroom subdivision’s Kalachara when he was engaged in awareness campaigning against rumours on behalf of state govt. Another woman at Bishalgarh was killed in similar way.

At least 25 persons have died in mob-lynching across the country followed by rumours abour child lifter or similar rumours.
