22 years youth’s dead body recovered from Gomati river : Death toll rises 14 in Tripura : 3912 families sheltered under relief camps

AGARTALA / AMARPUR, May 21 (TIWN): 22 years youth Chinmoy Rudrapal, who drowned in river Gomati today while catching fish at Amarpur subdivision was found dead. After 6 hours of searches, NDRF had recovered his dead body from the river. The locals said that Chinmoy was drowned while catching fish in Gomati river, but he didn’t know swimming whereas his friend who also fell on the river survived as he knows swimming. Immediately Disaster Management and local Police were informed about the incident. NDRF team rushed in action to find him out and after 6 hours of long searches his dead body was recovered. Devastated parents, relatives broke down in cries after the incident. With his death, the death toll in the pre-monsoon stands 14 at least in this tiny state Tripura. Total 3 persons in recent days died in landslide after mudwall house had collapsed over them in various parts of the state.

On the other side, according to DM Office record till 5 pm total 3912 families were still in relief camps at Agartala (Sadar) and Jirania.

West DM, Sandeep Mahatma said, “At Jirania there were 11 relief camps on yesterday, whereas today 8 of them have been closed. 3 relief camps at Jirania are still on service”. Regarding AMC areas, DM said, all the camps are fully active, even though many families have gone back to their houses but for meals they will come to the relief camps. Moreover, state govt is not taking any risk and they families under AMC have been called to join in the relief camps from the evening for their safety, if they want. For tonight all the 36 camps will remain active in Agartala's AMC wards.

North Tripura, Sepahijala Districts have remained almost untouched by relief camps but constant raining have damaged crops at there. At Gomati Dist TIWN reported huge losses to the farmers especially in Udaipur area mostly.

At Amarpur subdivision,  Burburia, Birganj, Bampur, Sabong areas above 150 homeless people were recorded took shelter in relief camps. But among all the Districts, the West Tripura Dist was the highest sufferer. 

On yesterday total 51 relief camps were active and out of the 47 were in the West District.

Two persons died in Tripura  yesterday after mud-houses collapsed over them.

In case of West Dist, due to Howrah river’s erosion and improper barrage-structures such disasters are happening in each monsoon. 

However, unnecessary fish catching craze like activities by common men are leading deaths in state. Disaster Management Dept has alerted the people to stay away fro, danger zones. Last year also due to negligence many died after drowning in rivers.
